The High Court of Bombay is one of the oldest High Courts in India. It has “Original Jurisdiction” in Mumbai and Appellate Jurisdiction over the States of Maharashtra, Goa, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.
The Bombay High Court was inaugurated in August 1862 and the foundation stone of the present building located in the Fort area of Mumbai,was laid down in the year 1871 The court building was designed by Col. J.A. Fuller, a British engineer. It took about seven years for the completion of the court building. The first sitting in the Mumbai High Court took place in January 1879
A remarkable specimen of Colonial architecture, the Bombay High Court building has statues of Justice and Mercy on the top of its facade.
The Bombay High Court has retained its name despite the change of the name of the city from Bombay to Mumbai in1995.
